Finally January (officially the longest month ever) is over. February is well under way and love was definitely in the air for many of you earlier this week on Valentine's Day.
So, as well as exploring trade shows for the first time in two years, we have been curating a lovely selection of gifts for the next big event on our calendar.... Mother's Day. This year Mothering Sunday falls on the 27th March, so you have plenty of time to find that perfect thank you.
Why do we celebrate Mother's Day?
Mothering Sunday is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent. It is now often called Mothers' Day. Historically, it was a day when children, usually daughters, who had gone into 'service' as domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mother and family.
Years ago it was deemed important for people to return to their home or 'mother' church once a year (daughter churches being the one nearest to where you currently live). So every year in the middle of Lent, people would make the journey to their 'mother' church.
This soon became an occasion for family get togethers. It is thought children would pick wild flowers or violets on their way to church or give to their mother as a small gift.
Today it is a day when children give presents, flowers and cards to their mothers / grandmas / maternal relatives or help with chores (and maybe a breakfast in bed!)....
